Why You Feel Stuck in Survival Mode
Your nervous system has three states — most people are stuck between two of them.
Many women I work with tell me the same thing:
"I feel like I'm always in survival mode… and I don't know how to get out of it."
They try meditation. They try pushing through. They try convincing themselves to just "calm down."
But the nervous system doesn't work that way.
Your nervous system actually moves between three different states.
Regulation (Safety)
This is the state where your body feels relatively safe.
Your breathing slows. Your mind becomes clearer. You can think, connect, and respond rather than react.
This is where resilience and emotional stability live.
Activation (Fight or Flight)
This is when the nervous system prepares for danger.
You may feel: anxious, restless, on edge, like your mind won't slow down.
Your body is trying to protect you.
Shutdown (Freeze)
Sometimes the system goes in the opposite direction.
Instead of anxiety, everything slows down.
You might feel: numb, exhausted, disconnected, stuck.
This is also a protective response.
Many highly sensitive women move between activation and shutdown, rarely spending much time in regulation.
Over time, it can begin to feel like your nervous system is simply out of your control.
But regulation isn't something we are usually taught. It's a skill.
And when you learn how to work with your nervous system, something important happens:
You begin to have more influence over your internal state — and gently move out of survival mode.
